At Least 28 Dead, 81 Trapped After Powerful Earthquakes Hit Myanmar and Thailand

Two strong earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 6.4 in magnitude, struck Myanmar and Thailand today, resulting in at least 31 fatalities—28 in Myanmar and three in Thailand, Anadolu Agency reported. The first quake originated in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, followed by a second tremor just 12 minutes later.

In Bangkok, 81 individuals were trapped after a high-rise building collapsed, with Thai authorities declaring the city an emergency zone. Thai Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai noted that such seismic activity is unprecedented in the region within the last century.

In Myanmar, significant damage occurred, including the collapse of a mosque during Friday prayers, which killed at least 20 worshippers. The National Disaster Management Committee declared a state of emergency in affected areas. Rescue operations are ongoing, with hospitals in Naypyidaw and other regions treating casualties. The UN expressed concern for the safety of children and families impacted by the disaster.
