Germany Pledges 300 Million Euros in Aid for Syrians at EU Conference

Germany announced a commitment of 300 million euros ($326 million) in aid for Syrians through the United Nations and selected organizations, Reuters reported citing Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. This announcement was made ahead of an EU-led donor conference in Brussels on March 17, 2025.

More than half of the funds will directly benefit people in Syria and will be distributed without involving the transitional government. The funding will provide food, health services, emergency shelters, and protective measures for vulnerable populations. Additionally, Syrian refugees and host communities in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey will receive support.

Baerbock emphasized the importance of an inclusive political process for a peaceful future in Syria, stating, “As Europeans, we stand together for the people of Syria, for a free and peaceful Syria.” She also urged the transitional government to investigate the killings of civilians in Alawite villages and hold those responsible accountable. Recent clashes in Syria’s coastal region have resulted in over 1,400 deaths, primarily targeting the Alawite community, according to a war monitoring group.
