Taliban carries out public flogging in northern Afghanistan

The Taliban publicly flogged five individuals, including a woman, in Takhar province on Thursday, according to a statement from the group’s Supreme Court, Afghan TV network Amu reported.

The individuals were accused of adultery, sodomy, and theft, receiving 39 lashes each and prison sentences ranging from one year and six months to one year and seven months. The punishment took place in a stadium in Yangi Qala district after approval from the Taliban’s Supreme Court.

According to Amu TV, at least 50 people, including seven women, have been publicly flogged in various provinces over the past three weeks for alleged moral and criminal offenses. The practice has drawn ongoing criticism from human rights organizations and the international community.
