Malaysia Proposes Tram-Bus System to Alleviate Congestion

The Malaysian government is exploring the development of a light rail transit (LRT) or tram-bus network in Johor Bahru to ease traffic congestion upon the completion of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, Dawn Newspaper reported. The federal government plans to invite private sector proposals within four months for constructing either network, with a focus on enhancing public transport for residents and visitors.

Johor’s state executive councillor, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, indicated that the project could cost approximately RM20 billion for the LRT and RM7 billion for the autonomous rapid transit (ART) system. The aim is to complete the project within two years, coinciding with the RTS Link’s expected completion by late 2026, which will connect Woodlands North MRT station in Singapore to Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru.

Experts emphasize the need for an integrated public transport system to manage the anticipated influx of commuters efficiently.
