Tensions Rise Over Madrassah Registration Bill in Pakistan

A joint session of Pakistan’s parliament is set for December 17 to discuss the contentious Societies Registration (Amendment) Bill 2024, which was returned by President Asif Ali Zardari due to constitutional objections, Dawn reported yesterday.

This move has sparked backlash from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) party, which claims the president’s actions are influenced by external pressures and undermine democracy.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar defended the president’s stance, stating that the objections were legal and not related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), countering claims made by JUI-F leaders. The JUI-F has escalated its rhetoric, accusing Zardari of insulting the Constitution and threatening protests if their demands are not met. The ongoing controversy highlights significant political tensions and concerns over legislative processes in the country, as various factions vie for influence and assert their rights amid allegations of foreign interference.

Currently, over 18,000 madrassahs are registered with the Ministry of Education.
