Shia Muslims worldwide commemorate sorrowful demise anniversary Sayyeda Umm al-Banin
Sayyeda Umm al-Banin, peace be upon her, a woman renowned for her devotion, sacrifice, and unwavering loyalty to the Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them, is remembered on the 13th of Jumada al-Thani.
As the wife of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, and the mother of Aba al-Fazl al-Abbas, peace be upon him, she played a pivotal role in supporting the family of the Holy Prophet and raising her sons to embody courage and faith, ultimately sacrificing them all for the cause of Imam Hussein, peace be upon him, at Holy Karbala.
Born as Fatima bint Hezam, she became known as “Umm al-Banin” due to her four sons—Aba al-Fazl, Abdullah, Ja’far, and Uthman—all of whom were martyred in the tragedy of Karbala, serving the cause of Sayyid al-Shuhada.
From the moment she entered the household of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, Sayyida Umm al-Banin devoted herself to caring for and showing immense love to the children of Sayyeda Fatima al-Zahra, peace be upon her.
Her upbringing of Abul-Fazl al-Abbas, peace be upon him, whose virtues were praised by the infallible Imams, reflects her noble character and elevated status in the eyes of the Ahlulbayt, peace be upon them.
Sayyida Umm al-Banin’s life was marked by piety, devotion to the Ahlulbayt, and sacrifice for the cause of God. Approximately ten years after the events of Karbala, she passed away, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and unwavering faith.
The Holy Shrines of the Infallible Imams in Holy Karbala and Najaf have been covered in black banners to mark this sorrowful occasion, amid mourning processions and ceremonies. Shia followers of Ahlulbayt worldwide hold mourning gatherings to mourn the passing of Umm al-Banin and recall her sacrifices.
Sayyida Umm al-Banin, peace be upon her, was laid to rest in the Baqi cemetery near the graves of Imam al-Mujtaba and Fatima bint Asad, peace be upon them, securing her eternal place among the righteous.
