Uganda landslide death toll rises to 20 as search continues
The death toll from devastating landslides in eastern Uganda’s Bulambuli district rose to 20 on Friday after more bodies were recovered and one injured victim died in the hospital, news outlets said.
Heavy rains on Wednesday night triggered landslides that destroyed six villages, engulfing homes and farmlands.
The Uganda Red Cross reported that 125 houses were destroyed, displacing 750 people. Of those, 216 are sheltering at a local school, while others have sought refuge with relatives.
Authorities, aided by soldiers, continue to search for bodies buried under debris, but ongoing rains and mud-covered roads are hindering efforts.
