Surge in Covid Cases Linked to New XEC Variant in the UK

UK health officials are alarmed by a rise in Covid-19 hospitalizations attributed to the new XEC variant, first identified in Germany in June 2024, The Express Tribune reported yesterday.

Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows an increase in admission rates to 4.5 per 100,000 people, up from 3.7 the previous week. The North East region reports the highest rates, with 8.12 per 100,000, and those aged 85 and older face even greater risks at 52.48 admissions per 100,000.

The XEC variant, a combination of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 strains, presents symptoms similar to other Covid variants, including fatigue, headaches, and high temperatures. Experts stress the importance of staying current with vaccinations and boosters for protection against severe illness. The NHS has started administering autumn boosters to vulnerable groups, including those over 65 and frontline healthcare workers. Public health guidelines emphasize good hygiene and improved indoor air quality.
