UN: One in Seven Children and Teens Affected by Mental Health Conditions

A new UN report reveals that approximately one in seven children and adolescents aged 10-19 are impacted by mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorders. The report, released by the World Health Organization and UNICEF ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10, highlights that one-third of these conditions emerge before age 14, with half developing before age 18.

Despite the urgent need for mental health services, access remains limited due to systemic barriers such as low availability, high costs, and stigma. Public funding for youth mental health services is particularly low in low- and middle-income countries.

The report emphasizes the necessity of community-based care over institutionalization, advocating for a collective approach that integrates health, education, and social support systems. The report also calls for prioritizing mental health as a vital component of overall child well-being.
