Wimbledon to Replace Line Judges with AI in 2025
In a significant shift from tradition, the Wimbledon tennis tournament will replace human line judges with artificial intelligence starting in 2025, VOA reported yesterday.
The All England Club announced this decision following successful testing of live electronic line calling during the 2024 tournament. Chief Executive Sally Bolton emphasized the need for maximum accuracy in officiating, stating, “We consider the technology to be sufficiently robust.”
This move aims to align Wimbledon with other major tournaments that already utilize AI for line calls, ensuring players experience consistent conditions. While acknowledging the vital role of line umpires in Wimbledon’s history, Bolton expressed gratitude for their service.
