HRW: Pakistan Intensifies Crackdown on Political Dissent
The Pakistani government has intensified its crackdown on dissent, particularly targeting the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, Human Rights Watch reported on Wednesday.
On October 5, clashes erupted in Islamabad as hundreds of PTI supporters, many from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, protested Khan’s imprisonment. Police used tear gas and blocked roads, leading to dozens of injuries among both protesters and law enforcement, with one officer reported dead. Over 500 individuals were arrested, including peaceful protesters and opposition supporters, under vague laws against rioting.
In the lead-up to the protest, authorities conducted night raids, arresting several PTI legislators and leaders. Khan, who served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, was arrested in May 2023 and convicted on corruption charges in August, barring him from the February 2024 elections. Although candidates backed by Khan secured the most seats, they could not form a government.
Human Rights Watch has urged the release of those detained for peaceful protests and adherence to international human rights standards.
