Saudi: Nationwide discontent following decision to introduce music education into school curriculum

The Saudi Ministry of Education’s decision to introduce music education into the curriculum, starting from kindergarten and primary school, has sparked widespread outrage across the country.

This move, part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s broader reform agenda, was met with significant backlash on social media, with many viewing it as a departure from the country’s religious and moral values.

The ministry, in collaboration with the Music Authority, announced that musical activities would be integrated into schools through the “Madrasati” platform. Sultan Al-Bazie, CEO of the Music Authority, revealed plans to include arts such as music, theater, and visual arts in general education, fueling further discontent.

Many critics argue the decision contradicts Islamic teachings, with the hashtag “#WeRejectTeachingMusicInSchools” trending on Twitter, accumulating over 25,000 tweets. The critics see the decision as a misstep, urging reconsideration, fearing it could alter Saudi Arabia’s identity and undermine the values that have long shaped its society.
