Meta Launches Movie Gen: A New AI for Video Creation
On October 4, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, unveiled Movie Gen, a cutting-edge AI model capable of generating realistic video and audio clips from user prompts, The Guardian reported yesterday. This tool aims to compete with technologies from OpenAI and ElevenLabs.
Movie Gen can create diverse content, including videos of animals and personalized clips featuring real photos of people engaged in various activities. It also generates background music and sound effects synchronized with the video.
While videos can last up to 16 seconds and audio up to 45 seconds, Meta has decided not to release Movie Gen for open developer use, opting instead to work directly with the entertainment industry. The model was built using a mix of licensed and publicly available datasets, reflecting Meta’s cautious approach to AI deployment amid concerns over copyright and deepfakes.
