30 Killed in Sectarian Clashes Over Land Dispute in Pakistan

At least 30 people have died in ongoing clashes between armed Shiite and Sunni Muslims in Kurram, a district in northwest Pakistan, due to a persistent land dispute, Dawn reported today.

The violence erupted over the weekend and continued into Wednesday, leaving about 70 injured. Kurram has a history of sectarian strife, with extremist groups from both communities active in the region.

Authorities are working with tribal elders to ease tensions, and a cease-fire has been agreed upon following peace talks.

It is worth mentioning that Shiite Muslims constitute about 15% of Pakistan’s population of 240 million.

This recent outbreak follows similar deadly clashes over the same issue in July.
