Scientists warn that climate change is intensifying heavy rains and increasing the likelihood of devastating floods in Central Europe.
A new analysis from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group reveals that the floods which killed at least 24 people across Poland, Romania, and other countries this month are twice as likely due to human-driven global warming.
The study found that the heaviest recorded rainfall in the region, which triggered the floods, is now 20% more intense than in the pre-industrial era. As the planet warms further, such extreme downpours could become 50% more frequent by the 2050s.
Experts stress that as climate change worsens, continued investment in flood defenses and resilient infrastructure is crucial to mitigating future disasters.
