UN Critics Say Global Body is Failing Its Mission Amid Ongoing Conflicts

As global conflicts intensify, critics argue that the United Nations (UN) is failing in its primary mission to maintain peace and security, Arab News reported yesterday.

The UN Security Council, responsible for enforcing peace, is largely paralyzed on critical issues like Gaza and Ukraine due to vetoes from the U.S. and Russia. This impasse has led to growing frustration among member states, with Slovenia’s UN ambassador, Samuel Zbogar, highlighting the “poisonous mood” stemming from major powers.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres defended the organization, asserting that the lack of peace is not due to the UN itself but rather the actions of its member states. He emphasized the importance of the UN’s humanitarian role, noting that its agencies are actively rescuing people in dire situations.

While some experts, like Richard Gowan of the International Crisis Group, criticize powerful nations for using the UN as a shield, others, like Yale’s Oona Hathaway, argue that the General Assembly has untapped potential to contribute to peace efforts. Despite criticisms, many agree that the UN remains an essential multilateral forum, even as it faces significant challenges. Guterres acknowledged the limitations of the secretary-general’s power, stating, “No power and no money.”
