UNICEF Warns of Catastrophic Impact on Children Amid Escalating Violence in Lebanon
UNICEF reported that at least 35 children were killed in Lebanon on Monday, surpassing the total number of child fatalities in the past 11 months, Anadolu Agency revealed yesterday.
The deputy representative to Lebanon, Ettie Higgins, stated that over 1,645 individuals were injured during recent Israeli airstrikes, with ongoing attacks displacing families and straining the health system. Since October, an additional 112,000 people have been displaced due to the conflict.
The UN human rights office expressed alarm over the sharp escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, urging an immediate ceasefire and protection for civilians. Incidents involving civilian casualties, including children and medical workers, may violate international law and require independent investigations.
UNHCR spokesperson Matthew Saltmarsh noted that tens of thousands have fled their homes, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. WHO representative Abdinasir Abubakar reported 582 deaths since September 17, including 40 children and four healthcare workers, with nearly 6,400 injuries, including 16 paramedics.
A total of 2,078 surgeries were performed for incidents on September 17, 18, and 20. Currently, 777 people are hospitalized, with 158 in critical condition. Over 90% of wounds affect the face and limbs, complicating medical treatment as hospitals face overwhelming demands.
