Thousands Rally in Lahore Demanding Release of Imran Khan
Thousands rallied in Lahore on Saturday, demanding the immediate release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently incarcerated, Anadolu Agency reported today.
This marked the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party’s first major gathering since the February 8 general elections, where they secured numerous seats in Punjab province. The local administration permitted the rally for three hours following a Lahore High Court order, despite the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party’s objections.
PTI Interim Chairman Barrister Gohar warned that escalating political and economic instability could lead to widespread protests if Khan is not released. He criticized the government for restricting PTI’s ability to hold rallies.
PTI General Secretary Salman Akram Raja accused the Election Commission of rigging the elections and claimed the current government lacks a public mandate. Protesters chanted slogans like “Release Imran Khan” and “Rigged elections unacceptable.” Khan, facing multiple charges, including corruption and terrorism, continues to seek bail while his party plans a nationwide protest for his release.
