Milwaukee’s Shia Muslim Community Commemorates Imam Hussain’s Legacy
On August 10, around 100 people marched down Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee to honor Imam al-Hussain, peace be upon him, as part of the Remembering Hussain March, Wisconsin Muslim Journal reported yesterday.
This event precedes the annual Arbaeen pilgrimage, the biggest annual pilgrimage on Earth, which falls on August 25 this year, when nearly 25 million devotees are expected to showcase their devotion to the Master of the Martyrs, peace be upon him.
Organized by Dar ul-Hikmah, the Shia Muslim Center, the march aimed to share the universal message of Imam al-Hussain’s sacrifice, emphasizing values like courage and justice as well as universal values embodied by Imam al-Hussain, appealing to all, not just Shia Muslims.
Participants marched for four hours along Wisconsin Avenue, stopping to hear speeches about Imam al-Hussain’s qualities such as courage, sincerity, and hope. Children actively engaged by carrying placards, reciting poetry, and delivering speeches. Volunteers provided information, water, and snacks, and a lunch break featured 175 meals donated by Dar ul-Hikmah.
The event also featured poetry recitation inspired by Imam al-Hussain’s legacy, urging attendees to reflect on their roles in combating injustice. Rev. Anthony Acompanado from the Evangelical Lutheran Church noted Imam al-Hussain’s unwavering moral integrity as a source of inspiration for people of all faiths.
