Amnesty International Censures Pakistan’s Failure to Ensure Safety of Protesters

Amnesty International has voiced serious concerns regarding the conduct of Pakistani forces during a recent protest in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, highlighting violations of the right to peaceful assembly as outlined in both international human rights law and Pakistan’s Constitution, Amu TV reported yesterday.

On Friday, several individuals were killed and many others injured when security forces opened fire on thousands of peaceful protesters advocating for peace. Amnesty International condemned this use of lethal force, stating it is unlawful and contradicts the UN Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials.

The organization also criticized the Pakistani government for imposing restrictions on mobile internet services in Bannu, arguing that such actions impede citizens’ ability to organize, spread vital information during emergencies, and can incite panic.

Amnesty International further admonished the government for its ongoing failure to promote and facilitate peaceful assembly while ensuring the safety of protesters. The government has faced persistent allegations of violence against marginalized communities, particularly the Baloch and Pashtun populations, raising questions about its commitment to human rights and public safety.
