NCERT Revises References to Babri Masjid Demolition in School Textbooks

The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has decided to replace references to the “Babri Masjid” with the term “three-domed structure” in school textbooks, Muslim Mirror reported yesterday.

The move has been criticized by Asaduddin Owaisi, chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party. Owaisi stated that India’s children should know the Supreme Court called the demolition of the Babri Masjid an “egregious criminal act.”

He argued that students should be made aware that a functioning mosque was desecrated in 1949 and then demolished by a mob in 1992, rather than “glorifying criminal acts.”

The NCERT’s director, Dinesh Prasad Saklani, had previously defended the modifications, stating that teaching about riots could create “violent and depressed citizens.”
