UNICEF: Over 50 children killed in Afghanistan floods

UNICEF reported that out of nearly 300 people who died in recent floods in northeastern Afghanistan, 51 were children, Amu TV reported yesterday.

The international organization issued a report warning of an increasing death toll and stated that most of the casualties were in Baghlan province, where heavy rains destroyed around 3,000 houses, damaged farmland, washed away livestock, closed schools, and damaged health centers.

Additionally, Takhar and Badakhshan provinces also experienced significant impacts, with initial reports of at least 300 houses damaged, the source added.

Tajudeen Oyewale, UNICEF representative in Afghanistan, mentioned that UNICEF and its partners are working to provide quick relief to the affected families and communities.

The organization has already dispatched family kits, hygiene kits, blankets for adults and babies, and clothing kits.

Furthermore, a UNICEF-supported mobile health and nutrition team has been sent, and UNICEF teams are on the ground conducting additional assessments.

The report also highlighted that Afghanistan is among the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change and has been experiencing an increase in extreme weather conditions.
