UN Chief Warns Artificial Intelligence Could Deepen Global Inequality
—————————————
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) could widen existing global inequalities if its benefits are not shared fairly among countries and communities.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Guterres said AI should become a tool for inclusion and shared progress rather than a factor that increases divisions in income, opportunities and security between nations.
The UN chief emphasized the need for international cooperation to ensure that the advantages of AI reach people around the world and do not remain concentrated among a small number of countries or companies.
Guterres has repeatedly called for the creation of ethical and inclusive frameworks for AI governance, warning that unequal access to advanced technologies could contribute to greater social and economic polarization.
He urged the international community to establish shared standards and responsible approaches to AI development to help ensure the technology supports sustainable development and a more equitable future.
