June marks hottest month on record globally, beating 2023 high: EU climate monitor

Last month was the hottest June on record globally, capping a 13-month streak of unprecedented global heat, Dawn Newspaper reported citing the EU’s climate monitor.

Every month since June 2023 has set a new temperature record, a “large and continuing shift in our climate,” said the Copernicus Climate Change Service director.

Record-high sea-surface temperatures in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans contributed to the soaring heat, the report mentioned.

Scorching temperatures have blanketed regions from India to the US, while relentless rains have caused flooding in countries worldwide. Wildfires and a record-early Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic also marked the first half of 2024.

While an upcoming La Niña phase may temporarily cool global temperatures, the director warned that new records are inevitable as long as greenhouse gas emissions continue.
