UK National Parks Warn of ‘Catastrophic’ Wildfire Risk This Easter

Britain’s national parks have issued warnings about a “catastrophic” wildfire risk this Easter following one of the driest early springs on record, The Guardian reported. Prolonged warm, dry, and breezy conditions have left large areas extremely vulnerable despite recent rain. Rangers from the South Downs to the Highlands emphasize the danger to wildlife, habitats, and visitors.

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) reports more than double the wildfires in England and Wales so far this year compared to 2022, which was a record fire season. Most wildfires are caused by accidental human actions such as discarded cigarettes or disposable barbecues.

Charities highlight that weeks of fires have severely damaged ecosystems, threatening endangered species and peat bogs that may take centuries to recover. The Cairngorms National Park plans to introduce a bylaw criminalizing fires between April and September starting next year. Park authorities urge visitors to act responsibly to prevent further devastation during the busy Easter period.
