Glasgow Central Mosque Granted Category-A Listing

Glasgow Central Mosque (GCM), Scotland’s largest mosque, has been awarded category-A listed building status by Historic Environment Scotland (HES), BBC reported. This designation recognizes the mosque’s architectural and historical significance, covering its original paved courtyard, garden, boundary walls, and railings, while excluding a later-added hall.

Opened in 1984 at a cost of £3 million, GCM was the first purpose-built mosque in Glasgow, designed in accordance with Islamic architectural traditions. It features a courtyard, dome, minaret, and arched openings, accommodating up to 2,500 worshippers.

The mosque, located on the southern bank of the Clyde, was built on the former site of the Adelphi whisky distillery. It serves as a vital community hub, providing over 350 weekly food parcels to asylum seekers and refugees. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it also operated as a vaccination center for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. HES praised the mosque for its role in the development of Scotland’s Muslim community.
