UK Interior Minister sacked following pro-Palestinian protests comments

The British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak terminated the controversial Interior Minister Suella Braverman on Monday, according to several media reports.

The dismissal came as part of changes Sunak is making to his team ahead of the expected general election next year, which included the appointment of James Cleverly as Interior Minister to replace Suella Braverman and the appointment of former Prime Minister David Cameroon as Foreign Secretary.

Sunak has been under increasing pressure to terminate Braverman after she was accused by critics of inciting tensions during weeks of pro-Palestinian demonstrations and counter-protests in the UK.

A week ago, the minister wrote a controversial article in which she accused the police of bias.

The opposition Labour Party said the article fueled tensions at a pro-Palestinian demonstration on Saturday.

Although Braverman’s resignation from her post seemed likely since the publication of her article last week, it appears that Sunak delayed making this change for several days in order to coincide with a broader government reshuffle that has been long awaited.

A former advisor to the British government attacked Interior Minister Suella Braverman over her anti-Muslim rhetoric, especially during the current war in Gaza, pointing out that she is causing division in the British society.
