Heavy rainfall kills at least 10 people, dozens still missing in India
Severe flooding in India’s Sikkim state has led to the deaths of at least 10 people and left 82 others missing, including 23 army personnel.
The flooding was caused by heavy rainfall, which resulted in the glacial Lhonak Lake overflowing.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state received a significantly higher amount of rain than usual, with 40.9mm falling between Tuesday and Wednesday morning compared to the average of 8.6mm for this time of the year.
This incident highlights the increasing occurrence of violent flooding from glacier lakes due to rising global temperatures and melting ice.
Scientists have warned that this deadly flood is a taste of more extreme weather events in the future.
