UN Human Rights Commissioner Urges Global Aid to Tackle Haitian Crisis

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, urged this week for a multinational security support mission to aid the Haitian National Police in addressing the rising violence and insecurity in Haiti. Türk emphasized that with international assistance, Haiti can overcome this dire situation.

The crisis has significantly impacted the country’s rule of law and basic human rights, especially for detainees in overcrowded and inhumane prisons. UN Security Council is negotiating a resolution for a non-UN multinational security support mission in Haiti.
