Marrakesh, Morocco – On September 9, 2023, Morocco was hit by a deadly 6.8 magnitude earthquake, the worst in over 60 years, claiming more than 2,000 lives.
The historic city of Marrakesh, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, and the nearby Atlas Mountains witnessed extensive damage. The devastation exceeded expectations.
Smithsonian Magazine reported this week that notably the 17th-century Kharbouch Mosque was effected, a cultural hub, and the iconic 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque, recognizable for its towering minaret.
Additionally, the earthquake devastated the historically significant Tinmel Mosque, signifying an irreparable loss to Morocco’s heritage.
