Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: traveler’s prayer is complete in entire city of Karbala

The daily scholarly meeting of Grand Ayatollah Shirazi was held on Wednesday June 5, in which he answered the questions of the attendees about various jurisprudence issues.

On the issue of choice between performing complete vs shortened prayer, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi referred to the 4 places of Mecca, Medina, Kufa and Karbala, and said: there are several traditions regarding performing the complete prayer in Karbala.

He added, the only difference is some narrations have limited the practice to the Ha’er, that is, 25 cubits distance from each side from the holy grave of Imam Hussain and not Imam Hussain’s shrine, because Imam Hussain’s grave is 20 cubits away from his shrine.

He went on to say: But a group of jurists consider the entire city of Karbala to be subject to this ruling, because there are authentic traditions that say that Karbala is the shrine of Imam Hussain, which means that it is the subject of Karbala and is not exclusive to Ha’ir.

Grand Ayatollah Shirazi continued to emphasize that the author of Urwa and a group of scholars and myself are of the opinion that “performing the complete prayer issue” applies to the whole of Karbala and the person praying can perform his prayer as complete in the hotel, street and at home, to any extent that Karbala becomes larger.

It should be mentioned that the series of scholarly meetings of Grand Ayatollah Shirazi is held every day in the Residence of the Marja in the holy city of Qom, at Chaharmardan Street, Alley 6, at sharp 11:15 local time. You can watch them directly from Imam Hossein TV.
