US Opinion Article Warns of Rising Islamophobia, Politicisation of Religious Identity

An opinion article published by the American website The Statehouse File has warned of growing anti-Muslim rhetoric and practices in the United States, highlighting increasing religious stereotyping and attempts to question Muslim Americans’ national identity and loyalty.

In the article, author Abdul-Hakim Shabazz argued that the word “Muslim” is increasingly being used in some political and media circles with negative and derogatory connotations. He compared this trend to discriminatory language historically directed at other ethnic and religious communities in the United States.

Shabazz said that Islamophobia is no longer confined to verbal abuse and negative stereotypes but has also become visible in election campaigns and political debates over immigration, national identity and national security. In some cases, he noted, Muslim identity is portrayed as a reason to question an individual’s loyalty to the country.

The article also highlighted the collective accusations faced by Muslim Americans, which often overlook the ethnic, cultural and social diversity within their community. Shabazz cited experiences of individuals who have faced harassment and insults because of their religious beliefs.

He warned that using religious identity as a political tool fuels social divisions and reinforces exclusion and discrimination, potentially undermining the principles of equality and religious freedom guaranteed by the US Constitution.

The author further stressed that portraying Muslims as a single, politically or culturally uniform group ignores the diversity of views and backgrounds within American Muslim society, reinforcing prejudice and misunderstanding between different communities.

Shabazz called for stronger community dialogue, the protection of civil rights and religious freedoms, and a rejection of attempts to exploit religious affiliation for political polarisation. He concluded that respect for religious and cultural diversity is fundamental to American democratic values and that all citizens should be protected from discrimination, regardless of their beliefs or religious backgrounds.
