French Looting Reports Raise Questions About the Relationship Between Reading and Vandalism

Reports of looting and vandalism during protests in France have sparked debate about the relationship between reading, culture, and social behavior, following accounts that some libraries appeared to escape theft while other public and private properties were targeted.

Professor Nour Eddine Mohammed Tawil, imam and preacher at the Islamic Cultural Center in Drancy, north of Paris, drew attention to what he described as a striking contrast: some participants reportedly looted shops and damaged property but showed little interest in books and libraries.

Tawil condemned the theft, arson, and destruction accompanying the unrest, arguing that social or educational demands could not justify attacks on other people’s property. He said the reported disregard for books raised questions about the place of reading and knowledge in the lives of those involved.

He also emphasized the role of literature, education, and cultural institutions in developing awareness, shaping individual behavior, and strengthening social responsibility.
