Lebanon: Calls for Urgent Action to Address Syrian Shiites’ Humanitarian and Legal Challenges
———————————
Calls are growing for Lebanese religious authorities, Shiite political and community leaders, government institutions, and humanitarian organizations to address the difficult legal and living conditions facing Syrian Shiites residing in Lebanon. A statement highlighted challenges involving residency permits, employment, housing, access to humanitarian assistance, and concerns over security procedures and possible legal action.
The statement also announced the establishment of an independent community committee to document complaints, follow up on humanitarian and legal cases, and coordinate with Lebanese authorities, religious leaders, and aid organizations. Its proposed work includes assisting families facing urgent hardship, pursuing complaints through legal channels, and supporting those seeking a safe return to Syria under appropriate guarantees.
The initiative’s organizers stressed that the committee would not distribute funds or claim exclusive representation of Syrian Shiites, but would seek fair treatment, equal access to assistance, and protection of their human dignity and rights under Lebanese law.
