Spain Faces Growing Muslim Burial Crisis as 30 of 44 Cemetery Sites Run Out of Space
————————–
Spain is facing a growing shortage of Islamic burial spaces, with only 14 of the country’s 44 Muslim cemeteries and designated burial areas reportedly still having available capacity. According to a report by the Spanish association Dignified Burial, the shortage is forcing hundreds of families to travel long distances to bury their loved ones in accordance with Islamic rites.
The report identifies Extremadura, Cantabria and Castilla-La Mancha as regions without dedicated Muslim burial grounds. In Madrid, designated burial capacity has also been exhausted, while plans to allocate additional land remain unimplemented. The association warns that demand could rise further between 2030 and 2035 as the first generation of Muslim immigrants ages, urging local authorities to expand burial facilities and ensure that religious rights and the dignity of deceased Muslims are respected.
