BJP Wins Muslim-Majority Reginagar By-Election, Reshaping Bengal’s Political Landscape
——————————–
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a major electoral breakthrough in the Muslim-majority Reginagar constituency of West Bengal, India, where its candidate, Shankharav Sarkar, won the by-election by a margin of 75,816 votes.
Sarkar received 129,914 votes, defeating his closest rival, Ghulam Nabi Azad of the AJUP, who secured 54,098. Congress candidate Mohammad Abdullah Kafi finished third with 6,168 votes, while Trinamool Congress candidate Rabiul Alam Chaudhary received 3,847.
Observers attributed the result partly to divisions among opposition parties, which contested separately, as well as internal rivalry within the Trinamool Congress. Local political dynamics also played a role after Humayun Kabir relinquished the seat to allow his son, Ghulam Nabi Azad, to contest, demonstrating that the father’s previous support did not automatically transfer to his son.
The BJP’s victory marks a notable shift in a constituency traditionally viewed as outside its strongholds. The result has drawn attention to the challenges facing a fragmented opposition in West Bengal, although its broader implications for voting patterns in other Muslim-majority constituencies remain uncertain.
