Morocco’s Youth Bring Gen Z Protest Demands Into 2026 Election Campaign

Young Moroccan activists and candidates are seeking to transform the demands raised during Gen Z-led protests into political participation ahead of the country’s parliamentary election on September 23.

According to Al Jazeera, the protests, which began in September 2025, were driven by concerns over public healthcare, education, employment opportunities, corruption and government priorities. The online-led movement GenZ 212 mobilized mainly through social media platforms, calling for improvements in public services and greater political accountability.

Several young candidates are now entering electoral politics, hoping to represent these concerns inside parliament.

Young activists argue that political institutions must provide more than campaign promises, calling for tangible improvements in education, healthcare, jobs and transparency.

The election will decide all 395 seats in Morocco’s House of Representatives, with more than 15.8 million registered voters. However, young voters remain underrepresented on electoral lists, with only a small share of registered voters aged 18–24.

Youth unemployment remains a major concern, with official figures showing a significantly higher unemployment rate among people aged 15–24 compared with the national average.

For many young candidates, the election represents a test of whether formal politics can respond to public frustration and rebuild trust through accountability and meaningful participation.
