Hijab-Wearing Woman Reports Alleged Racist Attack in Sweden Amid Concerns Over Rising Anti-Muslim Hate

A Muslim woman wearing a hijab in Sweden has reported being subjected to racist insults and intimidation because of her religious clothing, renewing concerns over the rise of hate incidents and discrimination targeting Muslims and minority communities in the country.

The woman, identified as 49-year-old Rafif Saleh, said the incident occurred while she was going to buy flowers for her daughter’s birthday. According to her account, she was verbally abused by another woman outside a shop before the situation escalated into an alleged attempt to intimidate her with a vehicle as she was leaving the area.

Saleh said the incident had a significant emotional impact on her and affected what was meant to be a family celebration. She added that she has lived in Sweden for more than two decades and considers the country her home, where her children were raised.

The reported incident comes amid warnings from Swedish and international rights organizations about concerns over racism and hate speech targeting Muslims and other minority groups. The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has previously expressed concern over growing hostility toward Muslims, people of African descent, Roma communities and Jews in Sweden.

The Swedish Institute for Human Rights has also warned about the presence of racism in everyday areas, including education, employment and housing. Meanwhile, figures from Sweden’s Equality Ombudsman have shown an increase in reports related to discrimination based on ethnic background and religion in recent years.
