A memorial monument has been unveiled in Nigeria to commemorate more than 270 civilians, including women and children, who were killed during a deadly attack last year in Yelewata, a community in Benue State.
The memorial ceremony was attended by survivors, religious figures, and human rights advocates. Organizers stated that the names of the victims have been inscribed on the monument as a tribute to those who lost their lives. Humanitarian assistance was also distributed to families and displaced residents affected by the violence.
According to local reports, the attack led to widespread destruction and displaced approximately 3,000 people from the area.
The memorial was presented as an effort to preserve the memory of those killed and to draw attention to ongoing insecurity and recurring communal violence affecting parts of central Nigeria.
The Yelewata attack has been described by different observers through varying lenses, including religious persecution, communal conflict, and disputes linked to land and security. Nigerian authorities and some analysts have cautioned that violence in the region is complex and cannot be attributed solely to sectarian causes.
