WHO: Over 1,300 Deaths Reported Due to Europe Heatwave as Health Risks Persist

The World Health Organization has announced that a heatwave affecting several European countries has caused more than 1,300 deaths, warning that serious health risks remain due to extreme temperatures, especially for the elderly and those most vulnerable to health complications.

The organization said severe heatwaves have become one of the major health challenges linked to climate change. It warned that rising temperatures increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, while also worsening chronic illnesses, particularly heart and respiratory diseases.

The WHO called on governments and health authorities to strengthen emergency response plans, protect vulnerable groups, and intensify public awareness campaigns on preventive measures. These include avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, drinking plenty of fluids, and staying in well-ventilated places.

The organization also stressed the need for long-term measures to adapt to the effects of climate change, as heatwaves become more frequent and intense in many parts of the world. It said early warning systems and stronger health system preparedness are essential to reducing deaths caused by extreme weather events.

Several European countries are currently experiencing unusually high temperatures, prompting authorities to introduce precautionary measures to protect residents amid warnings that harsh weather conditions may continue in the coming days.
