Afghanistan’s High Shia Commission Holds Consultative Meeting on Muharram Mourning Ceremonies

The High Shia Commission of Afghanistan held a consultative meeting attended by scholars, religious preachers and officials from cultural institutions to discuss preparations for Muharram mourning ceremonies.

During the meeting, participants called for religious rituals to be held widely and without any restrictions, stressing the need to provide suitable conditions for Shia Muslims to observe their mourning ceremonies.

According to the Afghan news Telegram channel Khabar Taza Afghanistan, attendees reviewed the challenges and obstacles facing Muharram commemorations.

Participants emphasized that preserving religious freedoms and preventing restrictions on places of worship are natural and religious rights of the Shia community. They said authorities should provide the necessary facilities to support the safe and organized holding of mourning ceremonies.

The position comes after several years in which strict restrictions on urban spaces and bans on the installation of mourning flags in public areas of Herat and other cities have drawn religious objections.

Scholars at the consultative meeting called for these obstacles to be removed and for greater coordination to ensure that Muharram ceremonies are held safely and without unnecessary limitations.
