Hong Kong Lawmaker Advocates for Halal Industry Expansion to Attract Muslim-Friendly Tourism

Lawmaker Vincent Cheng Wing-shun is leading efforts to diversify Hong Kong’s Halal product market, aiming to boost the city’s appeal as a Muslim-friendly destination. Following a fact-finding mission to mainland China’s Halal production hubs, Cheng emphasized the need for a robust Halal supply chain to cater to the growing number of Middle Eastern and ASEAN tourists.
During a recent delegation to Shenzhen and Heyuan, Cheng, alongside national committee members and local Muslim leaders, explored advanced Halal industrial chains, including R&D centers and production bases. The trip highlighted mainland enterprises’ compliance with Islamic dietary laws throughout a product’s lifecycle, from sourcing raw materials to packaging and distribution.
Cheng noted that while Hong Kong boasts over 300 Halal-certified restaurants, its Halal sector remains focused mainly on basic dining services. To better serve the increasing Muslim tourist influx, he suggested expanding the local market with a more comprehensive and industrialized ecosystem, similar to mainland practices.
Beyond food, Cheng proposed a broader strategic shift to enhance Halal tourism, financial services, and trade opportunities. By embracing this multi-dimensional approach, he believes Hong Kong can capitalize on emerging economic prospects in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
