Sunni Extremist militants killed 11 people and set homes on fire in a late-night attack on a remote village in northeastern Nigeria, local officials said Wednesday as reported by The Associated Press.

The assault took place on Tuesday night in Pubagu, a settlement on the outskirts of the Sambisa Forest area in Borno State, long regarded as the epicentre of Nigeria’s insurgency conflict. Two other people were critically injured in the attack and are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

Local authorities and residents attributed the attack to the extremist group Boko Haram, which has operated in the region for years, although there was no immediate independent confirmation of responsibility.

The chairman of the local council, Mwada Saidu Uba, said Pubagu had previously been considered relatively safe compared with other nearby communities.

Borno State, in northeastern Nigeria, remains at the centre of a long-running conflict involving Islamist insurgents and armed groups. Rural communities in the region are frequently targeted in attacks that exploit weak security coverage and vast ungoverned areas.
