Human Rights Watch warns of rising detentions and deportations of Afghan refugees in Pakistan

Human Rights Watch has reported a significant increase in the detention and deportation of Afghan refugees in Pakistan in recent months, following renewed security tensions and clashes involving the Taliban.
In a statement, the organization said intensified police operations—including raids, searches, and arrests across several cities—have placed growing pressure on Afghan communities. These measures have disrupted access to essential services such as healthcare and education, particularly affecting families and children.
Human Rights Watch noted that many refugees face legal uncertainty due to expired or missing documentation, increasing the risk of detention or deportation even in some cases where individuals hold valid visas.
The group reported a sharp rise in deportations in 2026, with hundreds of thousands of Afghan nationals returned, raising concerns that some could face security threats or humanitarian risks upon arrival in Afghanistan, especially those vulnerable to persecution.
The organization warned that forced returns may violate international law, particularly the principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits sending individuals back to places where they may be at risk. It called on Pakistani authorities to review current policies, ensure the protection of refugees’ rights, and work with international partners to find sustainable humanitarian solutions.
