The Global Nonviolence Organization (FreeMuslim) has reaffirmed that press freedom is a fundamental pillar in building democratic societies and combating tyranny, calling for enhanced legal and field protection for journalists worldwide.

In a statement issued on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3, the organization expressed its appreciation for the “knights of the word” who face risks and challenges to convey the truth and guarantee the public’s right to knowledge.

The organization emphasized that press freedom is not just a professional right but a critical safeguard against corruption and misinformation. It warned that silencing independent media opens the door for the spread of violence and hate speech.

The statement highlighted a disturbing increase in violations against journalists, especially in conflict zones and authoritarian regimes. It pointed out instances of direct targeting, which have led to casualties among media workers, as well as arbitrary detentions of individuals based on their opinions. The organization also noted the rise in digital threats and online harassment, which endanger journalistic work.

The organization called on the international community and governments to take immediate action, including providing legal protection for journalists, releasing those detained for their views, holding violators accountable, and enhancing the independence of media institutions free from political and security pressures.

In conclusion, the organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting public freedoms and promoting professional media that contributes to construction and peace.
