UK, EU, Russia Urge Diplomacy After Failed US–Iran Talks in Pakistan
————————————————
Global leaders have called for restraint and renewed diplomacy following the collapse of US–Iran peace talks hosted in Pakistan, warning against further escalation in the Middle East conflict.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq discussed the failed negotiations in a call on Sunday, with both leaders stressing the need to avoid escalation and maintain the ceasefire, according to a Downing Street spokesperson.
They also highlighted the importance of restoring safe maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz, amid ongoing regional tensions. Starmer reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting Oman and continued international coordination efforts.
Separately, the European Union urged continued diplomatic engagement, describing diplomacy as “essential” and praising Pakistan’s mediation efforts during the talks. EU officials said they remain prepared to support further negotiations in coordination with international partners.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also told Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow is willing to assist in mediating a political settlement, according to a Kremlin statement. Putin reiterated Russia’s readiness to support efforts toward what he described as a “just and lasting peace.”
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong similarly urged all parties to uphold the ceasefire and return to negotiations, describing the failed Islamabad talks as a setback but not an end to diplomatic efforts.
