Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to talks in China to end months of conflict

Pakistan and Afghanistan have confirmed they are holding talks in China aimed at ending their most serious conflict since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in 2021. The negotiations, taking place in the city of Urumqi, are focused on securing a ceasefire after months of cross-border violence that has killed dozens and disrupted trade and travel.

The conflict, which escalated in October and intensified after Pakistani air strikes in early 2026, has involved repeated accusations by Pakistan that Afghanistan is sheltering militants from Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Kabul denies the claim, describing the issue as an internal Pakistani matter.

China, which borders both countries, is mediating the talks and has stepped up diplomatic engagement, including dispatching envoys and facilitating direct dialogue. Officials say discussions are progressing, though they remain at a preliminary or “working-level” stage.

Recent fighting has included air strikes and cross-border shelling, with some incidents causing mass casualties and drawing international concern. Despite earlier temporary truces, violence has continued sporadically, highlighting the fragility of the situation as negotiations move forward.
