India Launches Census 2027, Mobilizes 3 Million Officials for World’s Largest Population Count

India has begun preparations for Census 2027, aiming to conduct a comprehensive count of its population—the world’s largest—after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The last census was held in 2011.

The government has allocated $1.4 billion (11,718.24 crore rupees) to cover staff pay, training, IT systems, and logistics for over 3 million enumerators, supervisors, and officials involved nationwide. The census will be conducted in two door-to-door phases, first creating a household inventory, then gathering personal data on age, gender, education, occupation, migration, and socio-economic details, including caste.

This will be India’s first fully digital census, using tablets and smartphones, with a mobile app and self-enumeration portal available in 16 languages. Officials say the caste data, collected for the first time since 1931, will inform affirmative action policies, welfare schemes, and electoral boundary adjustments, including women’s reservation allocations.

Experts note that the census is critical for policy planning, social justice, and electoral representation, providing real-time demographic and socio-economic data to guide government decisions. The final population figures are expected in March 2027, confirming India’s status as the world’s most populous nation with over 1.4 billion people.
