Global Shia Communities Commemorate Late Grand Ayatollah Shirazi, Highlighting His Legacy in History, Civilization

Shia communities worldwide have held commemorations this week for the 25th anniversary of the passing of Grand Ayatollah Seyed Muhammad al‑Husaini Shirazi (may his soul rest in peace), honoring his scholarship, ethical teachings, and contributions to history and civilization.
The late Imam Shirazi is remembered not only as a jurist and scholar but also as a philosopher of history. In works such as Philosophy of History and Islamic Civilization, he emphasized that history is governed by divine principles rather than being a simple record of events. He argued that understanding these laws allows societies to pursue meaningful reform. Shirazi highlighted moral and ethical values as central to the rise and fall of civilizations, noting that nations adhering to justice and religious principles achieve stability and progress, while corruption and oppression lead to decline. His concept of power extended beyond politics and military strength to include scientific, economic, social, and religious dimensions, stressing the importance of balance among these elements for societal advancement.
Shirazi also advocated a methodology combining reason and religious texts to analyze events, drawing lessons from the past to guide contemporary governance and societal development. He emphasized social justice, the rejection of tyranny, and principles of good leadership, citing Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) as an example of just and compassionate governance.
Recent commemorative events have taken place worldwide. In Mahajanga, Madagascar, Shia Muslims gathered at the Husseiniyah Sultan al‑Mu’allifin for Quran recitation, Hadith al‑Kisa readings, elegies, and a talk by Sheikh Muhammad Rady Wasaram on Shirazi’s scholarly and missionary work. In Damascus, Syria, Shia centers organized gatherings featuring Quran recitation and lectures reflecting on his life and contributions. Across Iraq, the Gulf, and other Shia communities, prayers, speeches, and remembrance ceremonies highlighted Shirazi’s enduring influence on religious scholarship, social reform, and moral leadership.
