U.S. Designates Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood as Foreign Terrorist Organization

The United States Department of State announced that the Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood has been officially added to the U.S. list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations.
According to the announcement, the designation will take effect on March 16 and could have significant implications for the group’s political and economic activities as well as Sudan’s relations with the international community.
Reuters reported that Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood is a political movement rooted in the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood and began operating in Sudan in 1949. Over more than six decades, the group has played a notable role in the country’s domestic political movements while pursuing its political and social objectives.
One of the most prominent leaders associated with the movement was Hassan al-Turabi, who led Islamist political activities in Sudan until 2016.
International affairs experts told Euronews that the U.S. decision could increase pressure on groups aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood and related political movements. Analysts also warned that the move may contribute to rising tensions and internal political divisions in Sudan.
Observers say the decision could influence both Sudan’s domestic political landscape and its foreign relations in the coming period.
